La ambición que por el oro de los europeos al descubrirse el continene no puede acotarse facilmente. Una vez conquistado el imperio azteca los españoles excursionaron en todas direcciones. En su expansión hacia lo que hoy es el noroeste mexicano y tras establecer un asentamiento importante en lo que hoy es Culiacán, la Ciudad Capital del Estado de Sinaloa, avanzaron hacia el norte. Le tocó en suerte a Nuño de Guzmán, malamente conocido por su maltrato y crueldad con los indios y por su enconada enemistad con Hernando Cortés explorar las inexploradas regiones.

Nuño de Guzmán tuvo que limitar su territorio al llegar al río Yaquí pues encontró una valiente oposición de la tribú Yaqui a su avance y no fué él el primer europeo en cruzar lo que hoy es el Estado de Sonora. La primera travesía europea fué la de Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, que habiendo sobrevivido a una derrota por parte de los indios en el Golfo de México en 1528 había atravesado el continente en un penoso viaje que duró 8 años. Habiendo llegado por el Norte, Cabeza de Vaca, desnudo y agobiado, junto con otros dos españoles y un negro arábigo fué ayudado por los pimas para reunirse con los españoles en el sur.

Entre los grandes y maravillosos relatos de la travesía de Cabeza de Vaca estaban los referentes a las ricas y florecientes siete ciudades de Cíbola y Quibiria. Estos relatos aumentaron el interés de los conquistadores por continuar sus exploraciones. Para 1540, el Capitán español Francisco Vázquez de Coronado emprendió la búsqueda de estas ciudades, llegando según él a Quibiria, lo que se cree es hoy el pueblo de Zuñi en Nuevo México.
En cuanto a Cíbola, lo que encontró Coronado fué la abundancia de toros y vacas, que en España les llamaron cíbolos y que hoy en día conocemos como búfalos o bisontes americanos.

Once the Aztec Empire was conquered by the spanish, they started to explore in all directions. In their expansion to the region presently known as Northwest Mexico and after being establish an important settlement in what is now Culiacán, the Capital City of the State of Sinaloa they proceeded to the North. It was the chance for Nuño de Guzmán, oddly known for his bad behave and cruelty for the indians and for his deep hate for Hernando Cortés, to scout these unexplored regions.

Nuño de Guzmán had to limit his territory when arrived to the Yaqui River because he found a encouraged oposition by the Yaqui tribe to his advancement so it was not he the first european in traverse what today is the State of Sonora. The first traverse was that made by Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca (Cow Head) that survived a defeat from the indians in the Gulf of Mexico in 1528 and had to make a pitiful 8 years trip walking across the continent. Cabeza de Vaca arrived from the North, naked and hungry, along with other two spanish and a black, was helped by the Pima people to gather with the spanish explorers in the South.

Among the great and wonder stories from the trip of Cabeza de Vaca there were those of the rich and flourish developed seven Cities of Cibola and Quibiria. These stories fed the interest of the conquers to keep their explorations. By 1540, Francisco Vázquez de Coronado departed to search for these Cities, arriving to what he identified as Quibiria, believed to be what today is the Zuñi Pueblo in New Mexico.
Concerning to Cibola, what Coronado found was the aboundance of these bulls and cows, that in Spain were called "cibolos" and known today as buffalos or american bisons.
